About Nariño Colombia
Colombia Nariño Supremo coffee comes from small family owned farms in the growing region in the department of Nariño, Colombia. Supremo beans are large and uniform with 90% of them over screen 18. Varieties mostly seen here are 80% Caturra and 20% Castillo. The main harvest is between April to August, and the mitaca (second) harvest is between December and February. The ripe cherries are hand picked, mostly by women from the region, then wet processed using traditional fermentation, washing with pure mountain water using a series of canals at their own micro-wet mills and then dry the coffee, typically on elevated tables inside solar dryers that provide protection from the rain. Nariño is one of Colombia's 32 Departments. It shares a southern border with Ecuador and is home to thousands of smallholder coffee producing families. Colombia's three ranges of Andean mountains converge in Nariño, presenting ideal altitudes and fertile soil for high grown Arabica production. Nariño's particular geography and proximity to costal and land borders have historically transformed it into corridor for illicit trade routes, resulting in unwarranted violence against residents of remote mountain farms. Today, thanks to the particularly resilient and fearless spirit of Nariño's farmers, the small region is a respected nucleus of coffee innovation. The Nariño region is located in the southwestern corner of Colombia merging the central and western mountain ranges of the Colombian Andes. The Department (State) of Nariño is abundant in volcanic soil with good rainfall. Narino is surrounded by Tolima, Cauca and Huila which together comprise the Southern growing region. Crops are harvested from April to June and from October to December. About 90% of coffee in the area is grown in full or partial shade. Elevations run high at 1750 to 2100 meters.
