Timaná is situated in the southern Huila, Colombia's largest coffee growing region. Its location in the valley between two mountain ranges which face both east and west give coffees from this area a unique range of complex micro-climates. Timaná was founded by Pedro de Añazco. The town is known as 'Villa de la Gaitana' - Gaitana was a female native who led the Timaná Tribe against the Spanish conquistadors in 16th century.
Coffee growers around Timaná, bring their coffee to sell when they visit town to do their shopping. The coffee is evaluated for density, moisture and visible defects and growers are paid based on the quality. These coffee groweres generally have farms between 1600-1950 meters. Caturra and Colombia are the primary varieties grown in the area and they exhibit the classic blackberry, chocolate, and clean profiles you expect from Colombia.
The 32 producers that contributed to this lot are members of the Asociación de Productores Agrícolas de Timaná (ASPRO Timaná), a coffee producer association in Huila, Colombia. The association was founded in 2002 by 45 farmers and has expanded to it's current 405 producers and their families.
